Gender and Pronouns
What are pronouns?
Pronouns are the terms we use when we refer to someone without using their name. Some of the most common pronouns are she/her, he/him and they/them. Some people might be comfortable with a mixed set of pronouns, like he/they, in this case you can use them interchangeably. It is important for us to respect someone’s pronouns so they feel comfortable and supported.
Name Changes
Some people may use something different than their legal name, so it can be a good idea to ask. It’s also important to ask young people if they’re happy for us to use that name with their parents
Gender Neutral Language
It is important to use gender neutral language whenever we can so that everyone feels included and comfortable. We should remember to use gender neutral language when talking about bodies and periods, clothing and families.
Ask
If you’re not sure about what someones pronouns are, ask them just like you might ask about their name. You can also use gender neutral pronouns (they/them) if you’re unsure. Some young people may not use the same pronouns with their parents, so it’s a good idea to check.
Correct yourself and others
If you make a mistake and use the wrong pronouns, just correct yourself and move on. It is also important to correct others if they use the wrong pronouns for someone. It can feel awkward correcting someone, but a simple way to do it is by repeating their sentence with the correct pronouns or name.
Follow our Scout values
It can be difficult to get used to using new pronouns or gender neutral language at first. Just try your best! It can help to follow our values of integrity, respect, care, belief and co-operation to stay on the right path.
