Aylesford Scouts - Adult Helper Request
5th May 2017
Do you like a bit of fun? outdoors? with young people?
Our ever-expanding Scout Group now has over 100 children, and by the Autumn we will have to cater for over 40 10-14 year olds!
YOUR HELP is therefore needed!
We are desperately looking for adults to come along and help, particularly with 10-14 age-group (Scouts).
Can you spare some time to help, whether weekly, monthly or just termly?
All it takes is a phone call/email and a Disclosure & Barring check..
Please contact Group Scout Leader; Krysia Keeley, via email aylesford@mallingscouts.org.uk.We're Growing!
16th February 2017
So we've concluded our annual census and the results are in. Scouting in Malling is continuing to grow!
We've had a 4.2% membership increase in our youth membership, taking our total youth numbers to 1067. Over a 1000 young people get to experience Scouting in Malling every week, and that is just brilliant!
Well done to all our volunteers and leaders who provide the opportunity for young people to experience everyday adventure. It really couldn't be done without you!
New District Commissioner
9th December 2016
A message from Elaine:
I am very pleased to tell you that the search for a new District Commissioner has been concluded and that Craig Worcester has been appointed (subject to county AAC approval) to take on the role as my successor from 1st January 2017. I am delighted with Craig's appointment and I am sure that many of you will know Craig from his role on the District Scout Team, and as a member of the District Executive CommitteeDuring the rest of December, Craig and I will be working on a handover and I am sure that you will give Craig your full support in the New Year as he settles into the role.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you have given me over the past six years - it has been a real privilege to be your District Commissioner and I have particularly enjoyed being able to visit you all and meet so many inspiring young people in your sections when you have made me so welcome.

In memory of Charlie
15th August 2016
The Girling Family are keen to share Charlie's memory by supporting the Development of Aylesford Scout Group. Our ultimate goal is a new Scout HQ.
Charlie Girling
27th July 2016
As you know the 1st Aylesford were this week attending Roihu 2016, the International Finnish Jamboree. I am sad to say that on Sunday evening while everyone was in camp one of our Scouts Charlie Girling collapsed.
Charlie was treated quickly by a Finnish Scout leader who was a doctor and the onsite medical team and paramedics from the local hospital rendered immediate support but unfortunately were unable to save him. You can understand how devastating this will have been for all concerned.
Charlie was a lively and energetic young man and a keen member of the 1st Aylesford Scout Group and he will be sadly missed. He loved Scouting and we loved him. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Charlie at this time.
Elaine Greenwood
District Commissioner, Malling ScoutsWe are so saddened at the loss of our lovely son, Charlie. He was much loved by us and his brother and sister. We have been overwhelmed by the lovely messages that we have received about Charlie, and how much he was loved by his friends and those who knew him. Although Charlie's life was short, he lived life to the full, and we are so sad that he will never fulfil all his dreams.
He was a keen footballer, did well at school and enjoyed Scouts and we are so proud of all that he achieved. We will miss his cheeky smile, floppy hair and our goodnight cuddles.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all their care, to everyone at Roihu who could not have done more for Charlie and then looked after us so well since, and to the leaders of 1st Aylesford Scout Group and the wider Scouting family for all their help and support.
Helene, Les, Abby and Jack Girling
This will be the families final statement on this matter and they respectfully request that they are not contacted by any media outlet for further comment. They will not be doing any broadcast interviews.

Tree planting at campsite
1st November 2015

I'm really pleased to tell you that we are being given 420 saplings from the Woodland Trust to be planted at the campsite which are arriving in a few weeks time. This is a lovely mix of crab apple, blackthorn, elder, hazel and dog rose and we will be planting these around the campfire circle and then along the edge of the new footpath and particularly to screen off the newly seeded top pitch.
We do of course need help to plant all of these trees so please come along on Saturday 14 November from 9.30 to 2.30 (or when you can during that time) to give us a hand. Bring a spade and a packed lunch and we will provide tea, coffee, soup etc.
If you want to bring any of your sections along to help please let Ken know so that he can be prepared for arrivals and do remind any young people to wear warm clothing, a coat and boots. All youth members will need to be supervised by either a leader or a parent so please don't suggest they come along on their own
This is a great opportunity to enhance our campsite even further and to screen the campfire circle. I do hope you will be able to help out for a couple of hours and you will then be able to track the progress of your trees and in a few years time who knows we can have a day making jam, sloe gin, and elderflower cordial from the harvest!!
Many thanks in advance for your support.
Elaine
Nominations for District Youth Commissioner.
29th September 2015
Dear all
As mentioned at our AGM last week I am very pleased to be able to invite nominations for our District Youth Commissioner. This is a role for someone who is keen to shape Scouting in Malling and is 18-25 years of age. Ideally the role should be a three year appointment.
The role is split into the following four areas and a full role description is attached.
- Supporting youth shaped Scouting within the Programme
- Developing young people
- Embedding young people in local decision making
- Wider engagement
We recognise that this is a role which would be more effective within a team and it is envisaged that the Youth Commissioner will appoint a team of deputies to work with them.
If you think that you would like to be considered for this role or you would like to nominate someone who you feel would be an ideal candidate please complete the nomination form as fully as possible and return to me by Monday 26 October. if you have any queries or would like to discuss the role further please let me know.
Please circulate this as widely as possible to ensure that we reach all our 18-25 year olds. It is also possible that there may be someone who has recently left Scouting that may wish to be considered.
I look forward to receiving your nominations!!

There is a very small group of people doing a fantastic job on the improvements to the camp fire circle.
However it would be so much quicker to finish if some more people could come along for next weekend on either one or both days.
If any leaders are available to help or even camp for the weekend with Explorers or Network it would be most appreciated.
As soon as its finished we will have a camp fire opening evening to celebrate!

28th April 2014

Over 600 Scouts plus leaders, parents and friends enjoyed a day at Aylesford Priory on Sunday when Malling District Scouts joined together to celebrate St Georges Day.
Along with our flags we paraded into the open air chapel at the Friars and enjoyed a short service which reminded us all of how we are stronger when we work together.
This was an uplifting reminder of our Scouting values and the qualities of St George and was concluded by renewal of promises, presentation of awards and investitures of 7 members of our Scout Network who are the oldest section in Scouts for young adults between the ages of 18 to 25.

These and other dishes were developed last night , as part of an instant meal creation night, at a District Explorer Scouts meeting. Over 50 Explorer Scouts and Leaders took part in an instant meal creation night, at Larkfield Scout hut, hosted by Nicola Mallett and Andrew Garnham from the Premierfoods
The Explorer Scouts were given an overview of Premierfoods and what we do at Ashford site, how we test products and how to make instant meals.
The Explorers Scouts were also given the opportunity to learn about food and tasting by taking part in a triangle test, identifying smells and learning about how important smell is in tasting food, by eating jelly whilst your nose is pinched and un-pinched.

Fund Raising for Demelza Children's Hospice
30th January 2014
Mark Stamford, Explorer Leader of Cantia ESU, is cycling from Sittingbourne to Paris from 30 April in aid of Demelza House Chidren's Hospice which is a very special cause for Mark and his family.
Mark’s nephew, Joshua was born with a rare, uncurable and life limiting condition and at just a few months old spent many weeks in Evelina Childrens Hospital in London. However when they realised that nothing more could be done to help Joshua they went to Demelza where the family were able to be together with Joshua for what was the last day of his life.
Mark says "From the moment we arrived at Demelza, we were made so welcome, and so at home. The staff were amazing and nothing was too much trouble. They really cared and this was obvious from the start. Their support immediately after Joshua passed away was superb. Our families were able to stay together whilst the funeral was arranged. We were totally looked after not to mention the free flowing tea, coffee and food. Even now they are continuing to support all of us in remembrance events and personal support for Lee and Vicky."
Please support Mark if you can with this really worthwhile event. Go to his Just Giving page where you can donate on line and read more of Joshua's story. http://www.justgiving.com/MARK-STAMFORD

William Warriors - Did we get crushed or were we the Crushers?
13th October 2013
The William Warriors explorers entered the Kent County Explorer/ Network Challenge to build a Water Melon Crusher held at Kent Scouts Lower Grange Farm Activity Centre.
After 3 hours of lashing, undoing and more lashing we finally succeed in building a water melon crusher, that is if you want your water melon crushed into 4 pieces.
It was a great weekend, with access to the new climbing wall, archery, shooting and zorbing, all finished off with Fish N Chips (or a pie), music, campfire, man hunt etc.
Oh yes forgot... bacon butty for breakfast the following morning.
William Warriors ESU Learn Bricklaying
10th September 2013
William Warriors Explorer Scout group donned their hard hats and hi visibility vests this week and were given a lesson in bricklaying at Ward Homes latest development in Kings Hill, Jubilee Court.
After briefing the eager 14 – 17 year old Explorers, Assistant Site Manager, Terry Hayward and Bricklayer Jerry Stockbridge gave them a full introduction to bricklaying. The group will be able to take their new founds skills away and using bricks donated by the Kent based house builder build a brick BBQ to cater for 100 to 200 people at the District campsite in Mereworth.
The morning session culminated with the group creating a mini version of the full size BBQ.Nicola Mallet, Explorer Scout Leader commented: “I had been walking past what looked like a pile of unused bricks for some time and knew they’d be perfect for the BBQ so I contacted Ward Homes. It was a bonus for us to get a lesson in bricklaying as well as all the bricks and the Explorer Scouts would like to thank Ward Homes for this unique opportunity. Having seen the development being built over the last few months, it is has been a real treat for us to be on the other side of the fence, seeing what a skill bricklaying really is.”
Pam Reardon, Sales Director for Ward Homes commented: “We are always trying to involve the local community with our new developments and are thrilled that we could help the Scouts out and they were able to enjoy this learning experience at Jubilee Court.”Kent International Jamboree - Tuesday
31st July 2013
Its been a busy few days for Malling's Shop Team at KIJ most days have needed two trips to the Cash & Carry to get in supplies of soft drinks, and the “shop” has been open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. with no break in between, the team led by our District Chairman is made up of members of the District Team, District Active Support Team, a Young Leader , Group Leaders and local supporters.
We are having a great time, we even found five minutes to dance to the music on Tuesday night when we almost sold out of bottles of drink, just a few cans left to start again on Wednesday.
Its almost a home from home at the Empower Chill Out Zone, with sofas, wall hangings and even potted plants.
Leaders from Empower relaxing after a busy day (and night).

Kent International Jamboree - Opening Ceremony
29th July 2013
“The parade to the opening ceremony was led by the Empower sub-camp, they paraded through the campsite picking up the other sub-camps as they went along. As they walked along behind their banners and flags, everyone “high-fived”, old friends met one another along the way and new friends were made. It was a demonstration that Scouting truly is a world-wide organisation. At the end of the ceremony the KIJ symbol which we had watched being assembled on Friday from crates of water was lit up and lasers strobed the sky. Everyone had a good time with singing and dancing until dark.”
“Scouts from Larkfield in Malling District spent the day in London visiting the Tower of London one of them commented:
“I thought the trip was really fun and enjoyed it. We all laughed loads and I got to see the Crown Jewels and Adam was invested on the lawn outside – that was great.”
Kent International Jamboree - Day 1
29th July 2013
Elaine and a team from Malling District are running the “Empower” sub-camp at the Kent International Jamboree (KIJ) at Detling this week over for 1,000 scouts and leaders from all around the world.

William Warriors ESU day on the River Medway
21st July 2013
An overcast day, slight drizzle, 18C and a north Easterly wind to battle, was not the most encouraging start to William Warriors ESU day on the River Medway. But we took out hand built canoe, “the Bacon Roll” out for its maiden voyage up the River Medway from Upnor.
It was accompanied with a flotilla of canoes with the remainder of the explorer group.
The “Bacon Roll” made it up the river and back again to our delight. The mark II design oars also survived.
We would like to thank Bob and Dave for their time and woodworking skills in helping making this canoe. The Dig
7th July 2013
William Warriors Explorers and the SAS set forth today in the Quest to find bodies, treasure and pots at Randall Manor at Shorne Woods Country Park.
We were invited to take part in the archaeological dig, at Randall Manor by County Archaeologist Andrew Mayfield, following a talk to the Explorers in May.
Randall Manor is a medieval country home where you come along and learn how to dig, learn what archaeologist do at a dig and explore history. The explorers were given the task of exposing a fallen in roof and had to remove top soil and lower levels carefully looking for any finds.
After 3hours of digging in 31°C sun, we found lots of roof tiles, a piece of Raywear pottery from an everyday pot and a very small piece of fine pottery with a green glaze from a pot.
A hot dusty day was had by all.

Scout Activity Week - Garden Teas
13th June 2013

Many thanks to everyone who helped at two Open Gardens in East Malling as part of the National Garden Scheme, on Sunday – you were fantastic!
We received the following letter below from Elaine Gordon thanking us all.
"I just wanted to thank you and the scouts on behalf of the garden 'ladies' for the magnificent way in which you kept people supplied with tea, coffee and cakes in both venues yesterday.
People come round the gardens in part to satisfy their curiosity as well as look and learn. But they also come for the afternoon out and a good cup of tea at the end of it. We could not have delivered on that last part without the help of the scouts and knowing that we could rely on you all made the afternoon so much easier for us.
Katherine down at the church was a real star - spending the first part of the afternoon on tickets and then the rest of it with her hands in soapy water washing up!
Mary Ann told me that although it became rather frantic up at the barn at one stage you all coped really well and there were no massively long queues, which considering that we had more than 500 visitors to the gardens all of whom probably wanted tea at some point is a fantastic achievement!
Thank you again: the Scouts' work was an integral part to the success of the day."
This was a really great Community Week event - congratulations to everyone involved.
Work Starts on a Campsite BBQ
26th May 2013
William Warriors are in the process of building a magnificent BBQ area at the campsite so you can all cook for the whole of your units. This will include a pizza oven to replace the collapsed Cob oven.
The BBQ will be situated by the campfire circle. Work has started and bricks have arrived, courtesy of Ward Homes. The area is well marked, but just be aware if you are using the Comp Wood campsite.

Mallings Phoenix Explorers prepare for the gruelling Winter Survival... again!
13th February 2013
It’s that horrible cold dark wet time of year again for the Counties intrepid Explorer Scouts to pit their wits, strength, skills, determination, teamwork and courage in Kent Scouts Winter survival.
The event has been running for over 40 years, testing the eldest sections of scouts to their physical and mental limits. Around 30 - 40 teams enter the challenge annually from across the whole county. Each year only 2 or 3 teams including the best navigators, strongest and without doubt the most determined complete it.
This is a gruelling 40 plus miles, cross-country hike, traveling by day and night in freezing, wet weather conditions over the weekend 15 - 17 February. Last year Phoenix Alpha 1 completed the event and its much junior development team completed all but 8 miles in -12°C conditions through the deep snow and ice covered Kent countryside.
After last year’s event both teams categorically stated “Never again”.
However twelve months on, and here they are, up for it again, true grit and determination.
None of the teams know where the start or finish is, until given the phone call early on the Friday evening. After that it’s a kit check then keep walking to the finish... where ever that may be.
The next check points are only given when teams arrive at them on time, so no one including those manning the check points actually knows the whole route. It is simply a case of keep walking until you can physically go no further, or the conditions become overwhelming tough.
Teams are permitted a few hours break in the early hours of the Saturday morning. To make things even tougher, no tents or sleeping bags allowed, only a big orange polythene survival bag to crawl into for a few hours. Adding further difficulty to the teams is a searching enemy tracking them down and trying to disrupt the teams progress using additional physical challenges.
Leaders, parents and family members know this is an extreme and tough event, everyone has everything crossed for them all to do as well as they possibly can.
Good luck to all of you.

A Borough Green Cub is striving to achieve his Kent Invicta Challenge award, a requirement of which is to have an article they have written by the District. We're only too happy to help and here is the article:-
From January, Akela (Cathy Riley), our Borough Green Cub Scout Leader will only be with us for the Spring camp and other weekend activities. She has been great fun and managed to keep us under control but also given us some great times. We have had days out at places like Duxford Air Museum, Dover Castle, she’s been to lots of camps with us – and she has never lost any of us. Cathy has really inspired me to do well at Cubs and to go on to being a Scout and even perhaps Chief Scout one day! Louisa Larsen who used to be the Beaver leader for the Timberland Colony will be helping Cathy and starts in January with Bagheera (Chris Luckhurst), I know she will be good fun too.

What a night at The Malling Scout Oscars!
27th September 2011
On Saturday 24th September, Malling District Scouts held their AGM and awards night, this year themed as The Oscars.
There was a small matter of business, before we moved forward the lights sparkled upon some very well deserved recipients.
Below are a small selection of pictures, with more to follow very soon!
District Development Day
17th September 2011
Many thanks to those who came along and took part in our District Development Day run for us by Sarah and Chris from the Regional Development Team.
A fun and interactive day was had by all while we pondered over what really matters to us all in our Scouting and in the District.
Feedback will be given in a variety of ways via sectional, GSL and team meetings and via the website but in the meantime for those of you who attended please discuss in your group leadership meetings and any let me have any further ideas you may have.
Elaine
Appointment of the District Commissioner
13th February 2011
Below is the announcement from Kelvin Holford, County Commissioner, with regards to the appointment of the new District Commissioner for Malling District.
I am pleased to announce that Elaine Greenwood has accepted the role of District Commissioner for Malling District effective from 1st March 2011.
I would like to thank Peter Nicholls for his many years of service as District Commissioner and for holding the fort past his term while I concluded the appointment of Elaine. Peter is already in discussion with Elaine regarding handovers and continuing support which again I would like to thank him for.
Elaine has already made her first appointment of Ken Sharp as Deputy District Commissioner and I think you would agree this is the foundation of a very strong District team.
Elaine and Ken will be spending the next few months meeting GSLs, ADCs and generally getting to know people. Elaine is organising a phased handover at Blacklands as she is currently working on some major projects with the Group.
When initial visits are complete Elaine and Ken will confirm the District team, and the intention is to hold a District Development Day to consult as widely as possible and to take as many views and suggestions into account for the future of the District.
Elaine hopes the new team including herself will be fully in post in September.
In the meantime please send all NAN forms to Ken Sharp and for CRB’s or Child Protection issues please liaise with Peter Nicholls.
I am sure we all wish them well in their new Scouting roles and will give them our support through this initial transition.

Blacklands at Duxford
15th September 2010
District Air Activity Day at Duxford – 26 June 2010
The day started at Larkfield Leisure Centre. We had to get there at 8 o’clock in the morning. There were 17 of us from Blacklands Cubs and 4 Leaders and a lot of other Cubs and Leaders from the District. Three coaches were there to take us to Duxford. Phillip wasn’t feeling too well but Trish persuaded him to get on the coach and have a sleep on the way. We were all excited.
The coach trip took two hours. We saw Duxford next to the motorway from the coach. It is a big airfield with lots of old planes and also a tank museum. When we got there we were given a quiz sheet and had to find the answers around the airfield. (The quiz wasn’t easy but we had a little help from the Leaders). We split into two groups, each with a leader who knew a lot about the planes. We started off in Hanger No 1 and saw lots of war planes and bombs and engines. Concorde was there and we got to go inside. It is the test plane No 1 which was flying in 1969. It was small inside and didn’t take many passengers. The last Concorde flew in 1993.
We saw lots of planes which flew in the Second World War and some could still fly – there were flying boats and bi-planes – and some of us went in a simulator – that was really cool! We also got to go inside some old passenger planes which belonged to companies like BOAC and BEA. We saw inside some bombers, where the pilot sat and the bomb bay.
After lunch we made our way up to the tank museum, visiting other hangers on the way up. There were models in the tank museum which Akela had made. There was one tank in a German butcher’s shop. There were lots of different tanks and landrovers from various wars – some were painted sand colour because they were used in desert battles. Some were green and some were painted in camouflage so that they wouldn’t be easily spotted.
One hanger had planes from the Battle of Britain and our leaders told us all about it. The best bit was a crashed German plane.
We had a lovely day at Duxford and were very tired when we left. We all completed our quiz sheets and all earned our Air Activity Badge. We would like to say thank you to Ken our ADC who organised the trip and to Scott, Dan, Trish and Allan for taking us.
Blacklands Cub Scouts
Borough Green Cubs visit Ashdown Forest
26th May 2010
Simon, a Cub Scout with the 1st Borough Green Scout Group, has sent in an article about their recent trip to the Ashdown Forest. Simon has sent the article in as part of his Kent Invicta Challenge. Simon writes..
In April 2010 me and my Cub Pack went and camped in Ashdown Forest. On Friday night we pitched the tents and then explored the Forest near by and then we set off lanterns around the camp fire and this went unfortunately not that well as we set fire to a tree. Then we had to find our way back to camp.
In the morning we had some breakfast at 6 o'clock and made our sandwiches ourselves. Then we changed into our full Cub uniform and packed our ruck sacks. We set off to our wonderful Llama farm in Ashdown forest and saw a baby reindeer in an enclosure and stroked the hairy llama Ralph. That day it was pouring with rain drenching us, but we still insisted on our 8 mile hike to Pooh Bridge & finally made it. On the way back we struggled so took a short cut along the road and eventually got back to our camp. As Cubs we navigated all the way and gained our Navigators badge & our map readers' badge. When we got back we changed our cloths as we were very wet & then played 40/40 in the forest until dinner was ready. After dinner we had a camp fire & sang some songs & went to bed straight after.
On Sunday morning we had breakfast at 8am & went pot holing in the underground tunnels in a bank. This was very cold in the holes because it was also wet & slimy.
After pot holing we had lunch & then helped break camp & then went home with our Mum & Dad which was very good as by then I was wet again and very cold.
Overall this was a good camp & I found it very exciting as I enjoyed the mixture of activities.
Simon, 1st Borough Green CubsIghtham descends on London!
26th April 2010
On Tuesday 6th of April, 1st Ightham Scouts, Quintain Explorers and Quintain Young Explorers went on a trip to London for the day. There were roughly 25 of us!
We made our way to London by train and then headed to the Houses of Parliament. We had to be in very smart uniform. We had a tour around the Houses of Parliament and we visited the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. It was very interesting and everywhere was gold! For lunch we went to Mc Donald’s which was very crowded! While we were walking, we caught glimpses of Big Ben, and every one took pictures of everywhere we went…
Finally we walked to 10 Downing Street, we were all quite tired from walking around a lot, and we took many pictures of us standing beside the number 10 door. It was one of the shiniest doors you could ever see! We were not able to go in, but we still enjoyed talking to the police man who stood in front of the door. On the way back to the train station we visited Buckingham Palace, and had an ice cream.

Stephen Young
16th February 2010
Yesterday afternoon Stephen was killed by an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands. He was on a Kent Scout led climbing expedition when the accident happened.Stephen had been in the movement since he was 6 years old passing through all the sections from Beavers to Explorers, where reaching his 18th birthday last year he became a Network Scout and was helping Craig develop this section. He was also helping run the Scouts at Ightham as well as being a young person representative on both the District and County Executive Committees
He will sadly be missed by us all and we ask that we give our thoughts and support to Borough Green and Ightham Groups and especially to his mum Judy (who was also on the expedition) during these difficult times.
With sympathy,

1st Borough Green Cubs Camping Trip
19th October 2009
Ashley, a member of the 1st Borough Green Cub Scouts, recently sent us the following article about a camping trip they went on. Ashley is working on their Kent Invicta Challenge award, and by having this article published, it's another item achieved.
1st Borough Green Cub Scouts went to Wilberforce campsite at the beginning of September. Friday night we played on the swings and in the trees. Then at night time we played with water balloons with the leaders then we had a hot chocolate and went to bed late. The next day we all got on a red double-decker London bus and we went to Chislehurst Caves. The Caves were a bit scary because the guide was telling ghost stories and then there were drums playing. After the first time it was okay. We went under this ditch that had been dug during the Civil War near a door that led to a house. In the Civil War they put sharp spikes in the ditch so the owner of the house used to run from the house and jump over the ditch but the person chasing him would fall into the ditch.
Next we walked to Bromley and bought some sweets and then we hiked back to the camp it was 8 miles in all! The next day we went grass sledging at the campsite, then we went pond dipping, which was fun. It was an awesome camp and I want to go again.
Well Done Ashley!

Platt HQ - The Official Opening
21st June 2009
On Saturday 6th June 2009, St Mary's Platt Scout Group had their new Scout HQ officially opened by the Mayor of Tonbridge & Malling, Cllr Sue Murray.
See the article below from Tony Woolven, acting Group Scout Leader for 1st St Mary's Platt Scout Group, which describes the journey to their new HQ.
Tony writes:
"Saturday the 6th June saw the official opening of our new Scout HQ by our Mayor, Sue Murray plus a blessing from our Cannon Vicar Liz Walker. I must admit my knees were knocking, however Liz and Sue were very understanding and within no time at all I was back to normal.
It’s now that time that one looks back to the salient features of this project that are beginning to linger in my nostalgia and although some of these were more significant to success than others they have all left something remember.
It goes without saying that with out the support of people of the parish including the local organisations and the Parish Council this project would have limped along to eternity. Their involvement was a demonstration of a community spirit Platt can be proud of. I must not, of course, forget my family. Especially my wife Stephanie, who has put up with this project for years without complaint and my son, Adrian, who when I was pontificating about giving the builder the answer to start – knowing funds weren’t quite adequate – Informed me that “Dad you are going to have to bite the bullet”
Oddly enough it was only at the end of this project that I realised how much we owed to the Scout Committee back in the 1980’s. Platt Scouts became homeless and their committee convinced Platt parish council of their need and acquired a lease on our present site plus Planning permission from Tonbridge and Malling which was another achievement bearing in mind the fact that the site is in the Green Belt. From the rumours we’ve heard this was not plain sailing. This gave us a head start, something we didn’t really appreciate at the start.
One of the early factors that stimulated us was an attractive kit built structure introduced to us by Peter Firmor, a colleague of mine. This building came ready insulated with windows in the roof that would suit our purpose and at a price that seemed achievable. And although we later rejected this design, it gave us the realisation that our dreams were within reach.
Another colleague of mine, Ray Fuller, produced a business plan that summarised our aspirations giving us the appearance of a polished professional team rather than the bunch of amateurs we really were. I am convinced this helped our fundraising.
One must not forget Pat Darby, our treasurer and secretary for above all else convincing me that the offer by David Valence, our builder to take on the whole project was worth going for. And her husband, Graham, who was roped in for many tasks, most notably assisting in the transport of 175 square metres of carpet tiles from Ascot.
Ones faith in human nature was put to the test when the builders had finished. Decorating the inside was to be a mammoth job especially the main hall. We had asked for volunteers but had no idea how many would turn up. There were no real indications as few had responded to my emails, I estimated numbers less than ten. Imagine our astonishment when twenty five arrived including some with considerable experience in this kind of work. And although over subsequent weekends we did suffer from a degree of volunteer fatigue we always had enough support to complete the task.
A critical moment late in the project came when I had inadvertently agreed to a 9:00pm finish to activities at the HQ forgetting that Scouts and Guides sometimes go on for longer. This resulted in another Planning Application. A local objection was raised resulting in our application being considered at a Planning Meeting. It was just our luck that our application appeared over half way down the list – just after the tea break. When our turn came a Borough Councillor stood up and supported our application after which there was a unanimous vote in our favour. The councillor who spoke for us on that day is now our Mayor, Sue Murray.
However the most significant factor of this project was when we accepted Dave Valences offer to complete the whole project. David and his colleague Grant took on what had been four separate contracts. Demolition, building the HQ, fitting it out the internals plus the construction of the steps/ wheelchair ramp and turning it into one contract. They sourced the best priced materials and labour. All this from start to finish within six months."
We wish 1st St Mary's Platt Scout Group well to many years of Scouting adventure and fun in their new HQ.
